New York Crime Reality in 2026: What Every Resident Needs to Know

New York City has made meaningful progress on public safety. Murders and shootings reached historic lows in 2025. But progress on some metrics does not mean your household is safe — and the numbers tell a more complicated story that every New Yorker should understand.

📊 2026 NYC Crime Snapshot (NYPD CompStat, Year-to-Date)

2,514 burglaries year-to-date in 2026 - down 21.5% from last year, but still nearly 7 break-ins every single day

2,853 robberies year-to-date - averaging roughly 30 per day across the city

6,377 felony assaults - the 6th consecutive year of increase, now at levels not seen since 1998

9,947 grand larceny cases year-to-date in 2026

Q1 2026: Fewest murders (54) in recorded history - yet 139 shooting incidents still occurred in 90 days

Hate crimes up 11.7% year-over-year in Q1 2026

The bottom line: while headline murder statistics are improving, felony assaults are rising, burglaries still happen thousands of times per year, and grand larceny remains rampant. NYPD response times average 8–10 minutes for priority calls in most boroughs — an eternity when a threat is happening right now. A trained protection dog from Simanovich is on guard 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with zero response lag.

Why a Protection Dog Outperforms Any Security System in New York

Home security systems generate alerts. A trained German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois generates deterrence — and then action if needed. Studies consistently show that the presence of a large, trained dog is the number-one deterrent to home intrusion. Burglars interviewed after conviction overwhelmingly say they bypass homes with dogs. In a dense city like New York, where apartments, townhouses, and estates sit side by side, a protection dog is your most reliable layer of security — social, alert, and always present.

Built for New York's Climate - From Manhattan Summers to Hudson Valley Winters

New York's climate demands a protection dog that adapts. April temperatures hover in the mid-to-upper 40s°F (8–10°C), summers are hot and humid, winters can be brutal with heavy snowfall, and spring brings unpredictable swings between rain and cold. Our German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are selected specifically for their resilience and adaptability - the same traits that make these breeds the global standard for military and police work.

Whether your dog rides the elevator in a Manhattan high-rise, patrols a snow-covered estate in the Hudson Valley, or walks the beach in the Hamptons, Simanovich dogs are conditioned to perform calmly and reliably in every environment New York throws at them - crowded subway stations, noisy streets, packed parks, and quiet rural roads alike.

Why New Yorkers Choose Simanovich Over Every Other Protection Dog Company

There is no shortage of companies selling "protection dogs." There is a significant shortage of companies that can back that claim with nearly five decades of results. Here is the difference:

"Cash is by far the best thing we've done. He does such a great job and is now part of the family." — Terry Bradshaw, Hall of Fame Quarterback

"There is no finer companionship and security than a well trained protection dog. There is no better provider than Wayne Simanovich." — Heath Shuler, U.S. Congressman

A Protection Dog Matched to Your New York Lifestyle

New York clients live radically different lives. A protection dog for a Park Avenue penthouse has different daily requirements than one for a 10-acre Hudson Valley estate. We match every dog to your specific environment, family makeup, and security needs.

Manhattan, Brooklyn & NYC High-Rise Living

City life demands a dog with exceptional impulse control, calm confidence in crowds, and the ability to perform in tight quarters. Our New York City protection dogs are selected for rock-solid temperament in elevator lobbies, street noise, heavy foot traffic, packed parks, and close-contact urban environments. They ride the subway, walk through Central Park, and remain completely controlled — until a genuine threat demands otherwise.

Long Island (Nassau, Suffolk & The Hamptons)

Hamptons estates and Long Island family homes need a protection dog that transitions seamlessly between relaxed family weekends and active home security. Our dogs integrate with families, guests, and household staff while maintaining clear territorial instincts for your property. Grand larceny and vehicle theft are among the most common crimes in Nassau and Suffolk County, a trained protection dog is an active deterrent every hour of every day.

Westchester County & Hudson Valley

Larger lots, longer driveways, and more isolated properties mean response times for emergency services are extended. From Yonkers, Scarsdale and Rye to Bedford and the Hudson Valley, a Simanovich protection dog gives families an immediate, on-property response capability no alarm company can match. Our dogs are comfortable patrolling larger grounds while remaining perfectly behaved with family and guests.
