How to Buy a Protection Dog: What 47 Years, National and World Championships and Hundreds of Successful Deliveries Taught Me About the Mistakes That Cost Families the Most

The dirty secret of the protection dog business
IIf you are shopping for a protection dog to keep you and your family safe, there is something you need to hear before you spend a dollar. Most of the "protection dogs" being sold today are sold on photos and marketing not on a trainer's ability. Learning how to buy a protection dog the right way is the single biggest thing standing between you and a very expensive mistake.
I have spent 47 years breeding and training these dogs. I have competed and won at the highest level the sport has to offer, and I have produced some of the top protection dogs in the world. In all that time, the pattern almost never changes: the families who get burned are the ones who bought the picture instead of the dog. By the end of this article you will know exactly what separates a real family protector, and a real expert, from a good-looking photo with a tagline on a website and the questions that will keep you from being sold the wrong one. This is an unregulated business. Anyone can say anything. We back it up with major wins in the world's toughest working dog competitions, endorsements from people you know and hundreds of successful protection dog placements covering almost 50yrs. We take this seriously.
Why most protection dog buyers get burned

The market is flooded. A photo of a big handsome intimidating dog and a slick website are easy to produce. A dog that is genetically sound, properly bred, correctly trained by an expert, and safe in your living room is not. Most sellers are trading on the first and hoping you never learn the difference.
Here is the truth I have watched play out for decades: Fido sitting still and looking pretty is not the same as a well trained dog in the protection phases. A dog can look the part, bark on cue, and still fall apart when asked to perform under heavy distractions — or worse, be a nervous, unpredictable animal around the very family it is supposed to protect. The four mistakes below are the ones that cost families the most, and every one of them is avoidable.
Mistake #1 - Buying looks instead of temperament and ability

Buyers fall in love with size and color. I understand it. But we're not selling cattle, and size is the easiest thing in the world to breed for and the least important thing when it actually matters. What matters is temperament a stable, tested, reliable nervous system that stays strong under pressure and comes right back to calm when the pressure is gone.
A "real" dog is calm until it isn't, and then capable of being calm again. Protection dogs at a high level are about breeding. Not every German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois is capable of this type of work. The world's finest genetics combined with training from an Award Winning program is not an accident. Falling for a nice website full of pretty photos has led to many a heartbreak when looking for a well trained protection dog. When it comes to temperament and character, if a seller is showing you a dog that is wound tight, over-reactive, or "always on," you are not looking at protection. You are looking at a problem waiting to happen in your home.
Mistake #2 - No breeding standard behind the dog

As with any popular breed, protection dogs are too often bred with no standard and no vision for quality bred because two dogs were available, not because they should have been paired. They turn out dogs for a profit with no testing of the breeding partners for the inherited abilities needed to perform at a high level. There are genetic differences in dogs that no amount of training can change. You cannot train bad character out of a dog that was never bred to have good character traits to begin with. You cannot train a dog to be confident. You cannot train a dog to be calm.
This is why I put breeding first, every time. Scientifically bred for ability, health, and temperament that is the foundation. Most sellers online are not capable of the protection phases at a high level, and certainly not capable of producing it at the highest level year in and year out for almost 50 years.
Mistake #3 - Endless Drive. No down time.

Some dogs have tremendous drive but lack the ability to shut it off. In the wrong hands and in the wrong home that is not an asset, it is a train wreck waiting to happen, or worse yet, a liability. A dog that cannot settle in the living room, cannot relax around your family, and cannot turn it off is the wrong dog for a family, no matter how impressive it looks doing bite work. When the doorbell rings and your dog is hanging off the ceiling fan, that does no one any good. Probably entertaining to watch, but not a trait we're looking for.
The hardest thing to produce, and the thing that matters most for a family, is strong nerves and the ability to be calm in the home. A dog that is a serious deterrent at the door as well as a relaxed presence at your feet and back again if needed. That balance is the whole point. That is the heart of what we call Huggable Security™.
Mistake #4 - Handler transfer after delivery, or lack thereof.

A trained dog with an untrained owner is only half a solution. I have seen beautifully trained dogs come undone in a matter of weeks because the family was simply handed a leash and left to figure it out. The dog is only as good as the partnership.
That is why personal delivery and hands-on handler instruction are part of the dog, not an upsell. When you buy the right way, you are not just buying an animal — you are buying the knowledge to live with it, work with it, and trust it from day one. Our commitment to you is only beginning with the selection of your dog.
What a properly bred and trained protection dog actually looks like
Picture the dog you actually want. Lying calmly at your children's feet on a Tuesday night. A serious, visible deterrent the instant someone approaches your door. A legitimate manstopper if the day ever comes that you need one and a loving companion every day that you don't. Also a dog that's fun!
That is not a fantasy and it is not two different dogs. It is one dog, bred and trained correctly. That is what our fully trained adult protection dogs are built to be, and it is the standard every family deserves.
Over the past 47 years I have placed countless dogs with individuals and families that started our relationship asking if we could fix their dog from another provider. A brand new dog properly bred and trained has always been the final solution to their protection dog needs.
How to vet a seller: the questions that separate the pros from the pretenders
When you call, ask these. A real professional will welcome every one of them.
Ask the owner if they have ever competed in working dog competitions at the world's highest level. Ask about the breeding program and the testing behind the dog. This includes testing for the character traits that make a real German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois a true family protection dog. Ask what titles, scientific evaluation, and proven working ability the dog and its parents have. Ask exactly what training the dog has and how that training has been tested and proofed. Ask what happens after delivery is there handler instruction, ongoing support, a guarantee? And ask to see the dog work. This is where we say come and compare. This is a big investment. We'll gladly schedule a visit. You'll see some of the top working German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois in the world. This is a fact. It's the real deal and not just a pretty photo on a website.
This will tell you everything you need to know. Pretenders get vague and defensive. Professionals get specific and proud. We're proud of our accomplishments and stand willing and able to help you in this process.
What it costs to do this right and why cheap costs more

We'll keep this short because it deserves its own conversation: a properly developed adult protection dog reflects years of careful breeding and training, and the price reflects that work. You can see exactly what a trained dog costs on our pricing page. Just know this the "affordable" dog with no breeding standard and no off switch is almost always the most expensive dog you will ever buy, once you count the cost of a protector that fails when it matters. As the saying goes, when you buy high quality you only cry once. On the other end of the spectrum is the scam of dogs in the high six figures. As another saying goes, "a fool and their money are soon parted." This too is for another conversation. Look for my next post on the pricing scam in protection dogs.
Frequently asked questions
What's the biggest mistake first-time buyers make?
Purchasing a dog based on a slick website and pretty pictures over temperament and real world experience. A big, intimidating dog with unstable nerves is not protection it is a risk. Temperament and breeding come first, every time. Great dogs are born.
Do I need an already-trained dog, or can I start with a puppy?
Both are good paths for the right person. If you want a proven protector ready to go, look at our fully trained adult protection dogs. If you want to raise and develop the dog as a hobby, or have children in search of a hobby, start with working puppies from proven genetics however, as I tell everyone, "the older they are the more I'm an expert." All three age groups we provide have advantages and disadvantages. Look for my post on our age groups.
How do I know a protection dog is the right move for my family? It comes down to breeding and training a stable temperament, calm in the home, and Award Winning training. That is exactly what makes Huggable Security™ possible, and it is the standard every one of our dogs is held to.
